“Beyond Belief: Trusting God Enough to Obey”

The old hymn says it simply, but profoundly:

“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

Trust: The Foundation of Joyful Living

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (NKJV)

Trusting God means letting go of the illusion that we know best. It means believing that His ways are higher, even when they’re harder.

Elisabeth Elliot, in Keep a Quiet Heart, beautifully writes:

“God is God. Because He is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will.”

When we trust Him, we trade anxiety for peace, confusion for clarity, and fear for freedom.

Obedience: The Expression of Love

Trust leads us to obedience, not out of obligation, but out of love.

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

Obedience is not legalism; it is the fruit of love and the pathway to joy.

Trust and Obedience Work Together

One without the other is incomplete. Trust without obedience is empty belief. Obedience without trust is fearful striving. But when they walk hand-in-hand, they form a beautiful dance of faith that pleases God and fulfills us.

“The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

Andrew Murray, in Absolute Surrender, said:

“God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.”

What It Looks Like in Daily Life

  • Trusting God with your future—even when it’s unclear

The Reward: Happiness in Jesus

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy.”
— Psalm 16:11 (ESV)

So often, we search for happiness in circumstances, people, or possessions. But Jesus reminds us that true joy is found in Him, when we trust Him deeply and obey Him fully.

Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God, wrote:

“You cannot stay where you are and go with God. Trust Him. Obey Him. And watch your life be used for His glory.”

A Simple but Powerful Hymn

“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way,
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

These words are more than just lyrics. They are a lifestyle, a declaration, a daily decision.

The world offers fleeting happiness. Jesus offers lasting joy. And it is yours—when you choose to trust and obey.
