Why the Message of the Cross Still Offends—and Saves

There is a message so powerful it can change lives, restore the broken, and open the gates of eternity—yet to many, it seems foolish, irrelevant, or even offensive.

The Apostle Paul addressed this very issue in 1 Corinthians 1:18 when he wrote:

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

In a world that celebrates intellect, self-sufficiency, and worldly success, the idea that salvation comes through a crucified Savior is baffling. Why would God choose the path of suffering, humility, and sacrifice as the vehicle of redemption?

Because God's wisdom does not operate like man's wisdom.

The Offense of the Cross

The cross is not just a symbol—it is a declaration that we are sinners in need of a Savior. And that is offensive to pride. To admit that we cannot save ourselves, that we need divine grace, is contrary to human nature.

Paul goes on to say:

“But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.”
—1 Corinthians 1:23

To some, the Gospel offends their traditions; to others, it insults their intellect. Yet in both cases, the resistance is not simply to the method of salvation, but to the message of surrender.

The Power Hidden in What Seems Foolish

God deliberately chose what the world sees as foolish to demonstrate His power.

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
—1 Corinthians 1:27

This is the mystery of the Gospel: That eternal life was purchased not by human effort, but by divine grace. That power was revealed not in conquest, but in a crucifixion. That victory came not through a sword, but through a Savior who died and rose again.

To the perishing, this sounds like nonsense. But to the believer, it's everything.

Why We Must Still Preach “Foolishness”

We live in a time where truth is often reshaped to fit comfort. Yet, the cross remains central. We cannot edit the Gospel to make it more palatable.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.”
—Romans 1:16

The same message that was mocked in Paul’s day is still mocked today—but it is still saving souls. It is still restoring lives. It is still opening blind eyes.

Don't Be Ashamed of the Gospel

If you find yourself hesitant to speak about your faith, remember that what sounds like foolishness to some is life and light to others. We are not responsible for the results—we are called to be faithful witnesses.

So stand firm. Speak boldly. Share humbly. And never forget:
What is foolish to the world… is power to the saved.

“He who wins souls is wise.”
—Proverbs 11:30

Are you willing to embrace the “foolishness” of the cross to receive the wisdom of God?

Let the world think what it will—Christ is still the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24).
