“Leadership and the Believer’s Mindset”

 


Leadership is a weighty calling—both for those who carry the mantle and for those who live under it. In our current culture, it’s easy to form strong opinions about leaders—spiritual, political, corporate, or familial. Social media, headlines, and personal experiences often influence our judgments. But as believers, how we think and speak about our leaders matters to God. Scripture doesn’t just address how leaders should behave—it also speaks to how we should regard them in our thoughts and hearts.

Choose A Heart Posture Heaven Honors

"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."

Have you ever felt the ache of disappointment in a leader, a pastor who failed, a politician who broke promises, or a supervisor who misused their power? It's real. Leadership can inspire... but it can also wound. In these moments, our thoughts become the battlefield. What do we do with the silent frustrations, the unspoken criticisms, the angry prayers?

God invites us to navigate our thoughts with care, not just for the sake of leadership, but for the sake of our own hearts.

Leadership Is Still God's Idea

Even when leadership feels flawed, we must remember: God is not unaware. He establishes leadership for order, for purpose — even when the vessels are imperfect.

“By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just.”
Proverbs 8:15

God has used the righteous and the rebellious to fulfill His will. Think of Pharaoh. Nebuchadnezzar. Even Judas. Their stories remind us that divine sovereignty is not limited by human frailty.

So, what do we do when we don’t understand leadership? We trust the One who holds leaders accountable.

Your Thoughts Matter to Heaven

It’s easy to think that silent disapproval is harmless, but Scripture says otherwise.

“Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom…”
Ecclesiastes 10:20 (NIV)

God hears what no one else does — the sighs of resentment, the quiet accusations, the inner sarcasm. He calls us to bring even those unspoken thoughts into the light, because what fills our hearts eventually shapes our words, our attitudes, our honor — or lack of it.

Criticism Is Easy — But Prayer Is Powerful

It’s effortless to point fingers. But the Kingdom way is different.

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority…”
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV)

God is not asking us to ignore injustice. But He’s asking us to engage heaven before we engage the group chat. To cry out for wisdom instead of complaints. To pray for strength instead of plotting revenge.

Because every leader — even the one you dislike — is someone Jesus died for.

Honor Isn’t Agreement — It’s Obedience

David had every earthly reason to despise King Saul. Saul tried to kill him. Lied about him. Chased him through caves and deserts.

But when David had the chance to take Saul’s life, he said:

“The LORD forbid that I should lay a hand on the LORD’s anointed.”
1 Samuel 26:11 (NIV)

David wasn't endorsing Saul's actions. He was honoring God’s order.
This takes humility. It takes restraint. It takes God’s Spirit inside us to choose reverence over revenge.

Let Jesus Shape Your Mindset

The truth is — the way we respond to leadership says more about us than them.

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…”
Philippians 2:5 (KJV)

Jesus had every right to overthrow corrupt leaders. But instead, He submitted to the will of the Father. He taught, served, washed feet, and gave His life under the authority of unjust men.

And still He prayed, “Father, forgive them…”

Choose Honor in a Dishonoring World

You are not powerless in the face of failed leadership. You are powerful because you can pray. You can forgive. You can speak life. You can be a vessel of honor in a culture of dishonor.

So today, before you share that opinion, before you roll your eyes in silence, before you give up praying. Ask the Lord: "What are You trying to teach me through this? What is your heart for this leader?"

Because when we choose to navigate our thoughts with care, we align with Heaven. We reflect Jesus. We protect our peace, and we rise above.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
