What Does It Really Mean to “Seek First the Kingdom”?

To seek first the kingdom is to make Jesus Lord over every square inch of your life. It’s about more than attending church or reading your Bible now and then. It’s about giving Him full reign—over your dreams, your schedule, your money, your relationships, your identity.

Dallas Willard put it this way in The Divine Conspiracy:

“The Kingdom of God is present wherever what God wants done is done.”

It means we stop living life on our own terms and start asking, “Lord, what do You want?”

Why It Matters So Deeply

Jesus spoke these words in the context of anxiety and worry. He knew our hearts would be burdened with questions like:
Will I have enough? Will I be successful? Will I be loved?

But His answer wasn’t more striving. It was surrender.

“Do not worry… For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” — Matthew 6:31-32
“But seek first His kingdom…” — Matthew 6:33

He wasn’t offering a life of less struggle but a life of deeper trust. He was inviting us to place our fragile hearts into His faithful hands.

How do we actually live this out when the world is loud and our lives are full?

1. Surrender—Every Morning, Every Moment

Don’t wait until life breaks you. Choose to lay your heart down daily. Let God set the tone for your day, your thoughts, your decisions.

“Your kingdom come, your will be done…” — Matthew 6:10

Your greatest strength lies in surrender.

2. Dwell in the Word of the King

God’s Word is not just information. It’s oxygen for the soul. It reveals His heart and aligns yours with heaven.

Let the Word saturate you until your life begins to echo the heartbeat of heaven.

3. Live the Kingdom from the Inside Out

4. Let God Lead Every Decision

Before every “yes” or “no,” pause and pray. Let heaven interrupt your earthly agenda.

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:6

5. Serve from a Heart Set on the King

He Will Add All These Things…

When we stop chasing and start seeking, something beautiful happens: peace replaces pressure. The Father begins to carry what we were never meant to hold.

He promises:

“All these things shall be added to you.”

And we realize—Jesus is not a piece of the puzzle. He is the whole picture.

C.S. Lewis said it best:

“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in’: aim at earth and you will get neither.”

Let this be more than a verse on your wall. Let it be the rhythm of your life.

Seek Him first.
Seek Him deeply.
Seek Him always.

Because in the end, the greatest reward of seeking the Kingdom... is finding the King.
